Sited north-west of Melbourne, 620 meters above sea level and on the southern face of Mount Macedon, the highest peak of the Great Dividing Range and remnant rim of a once enormous volcano, Derriweit Heights is considered the first and earliest home to be built "in the heavens" on the Mount.
Derriweit Heights was built 656 metres above sea level on Mount Macedon, Victoria. Commanding stunning panoramic views across the valley to Melbourne, Port Phillip Bay and beyond, the 26 hectare (64 acre) estate was blessed with fertile soil, natural springs, streams, fern glades and native bush and temperate climatic conditions.
Charles Ryan set about imposing a European style of garden over this native Australian paradise in the 1870s. Rolling parklands brimming with rare species of plants and trees (sourced from all over the world) and interspaced with lagoons and lakes, pathways and all the hallmarks of wealth at that time. Charles designed the garden with family friend, Government Botanist Sir Ferdinand von Mueller, the designer of Melbourne's Botanic Gardens and many other botanic gardens throughout Victoria.
Derriweit Heights stands proudly today, witness to the century and a half since it was first built. Although the land is smaller since first the home was constructed, it remains nestled on the Mount - gloriously enhanced throughout its many incarnations - retaining breathtaking views across the 21st century valley and cityscape.
Charles Ryan's first born (of seven children) was Marion Ellis Rowan 1848 - 1922. She was one of Australia's most gifted, prolific and highly decorated Floral Artists & Naturalist. Producing over 3000 artworks in her lifetime, she was famed throughout Australia. Although she travelled the world, her family home Derriweit Heights remained her most cherished touchstone.
Coming to 2026 is the opportunity for you to visit Derriweit Heights and learn about its colorful past and past residents. For the first time in its history, we will be offering a limited range of curated talks, special events, open days and hire opportunities.
